What Are Hives?

Hives are raised, red welts that can appear suddenly on the surface of your skin as your body responds to irritation. Usually, the welts are itchy, and scratching them can make them worse. Hives may show up alone or in a group, sometimes connecting with each other to cover large areas of your body.

Most of the time, hives are harmless and will resolve on their own within a few hours. However, if your skin rash is accompanied by signs of anaphylaxis, such as mouth swelling, vomiting, or difficulty breathing, swallowing, or talking, it’s important to seek immediate medical attention by calling 911 or heading directly to the nearest emergency room.

Hive Triggers

Oftentimes, the exact cause of hives is unknown. Some possible triggers include:

  • Temperature extremes
  • Ultraviolet (UV) rays
  • Pressure from tight clothing
  • Irritation from scratchy fabrics
  • Emotional stress
  • Exercise
  • Viruses and infections
  • An allergic reaction to certain foods, medications, plants, chemicals, animal dander, insect bites or stings, or latex

How Are Hives Treated?

The goal of non-emergency hive treatment is to relieve the associated itching and avoid triggers that can cause the rash to worsen. Some options include:

  • Taking an over-the-counter antihistamine
  • Applying a cold compress to the affected area of skin
  • Taking a cool bath or shower
  • Wearing soft, loose-fitting clothing
  • Protecting your skin from sun exposure
  • Using gentle soaps and laundry detergents
  • Refraining from rubbing and scratching your skin
  • Washing your hands thoroughly and often, especially after touching pets
