STIs & Seniors – A Reality Check for Older Adults

The transmission of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) is a common and growing problem among older adults. When providing care to an elderly loved one, many caregivers are surprised when they encounter this issue. What’s going on?

Actually, what’s going on in many assisted living facilities and nursing homes is very similar to what’s going on in many college dorms and spring break hotels – lots of unprotected sex. And with that comes a greater risk of STIs.

The Multi-Faceted Reasons Behind the Rising Rate of Unprotected Sex Among Seniors

Among seniors, a general lack of recognition that a problem exists may be leading to situations in which STIs are easily spread. Other reasons run the gamut from simple to complex. For instance:

  • Post-menopausal women are able to have sex without any fear of becoming pregnant.
  • Because there are significantly fewer older men than older women, some older women may be having unprotected sex in order to please or keep a partner.
  • Some older adults are using online dating services, which can increase the likelihood that they are unfamiliar with their partner’s sexual history.
  • The body’s immune system weakens with age, rendering it less effective at fighting off STIs and other infections.
  • Many physicians don’t discuss sexual activity with seniors, and STI-testing is not standard examination protocol.

Individually or in combination, all of these reasons have led to a rampant spread of STIs amongst older adults. But, what is more important than the reasons behind it is what can be done to slow or stop its progression.

A Difficult but Necessary Conversation

If you’re caring for an older loved one, you should educate him or her about the dangers of unprotected sex. This discussion is especially important when you consider a senior’s weakened immune system and the possibility of STIs complicating his or her other medical conditions.
