What Is the Difference Between a Cold Sore & a Canker Sore?

Difference Between Cold Sore & Canker Sore Tampa FLCold sores, which usually develop on the edges of the lips, are contagious. Canker sores, which form on the inside of the mouth, are not. There are other differences between these two types of mouth irritation as well. Read on to learn more.

What Are Cold Sores?

Cold sores – clusters of small, fluid-filled blisters that develop around the lips, cheeks, and nose – are caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). An initial infection may be accompanied by fatigue, fever, and swollen glands. These symptoms typically resolve after the illness runs its course, but the virus remains dormant within the body’s nerve cells and may reactivate at a later time. Some possible triggers include sunburn, stress, fever, fatigue, and gastrointestinal distress.

After cold sores break open, they dry up, crust over, and heal within 7-10 days. Recurrences, which tend to be less severe than the initial infection, typically begin with a tingling sensation 24-48 hours before the blisters appear.

There is no cure for cold sores. Certain remedies such as antiviral topical ointments, oral antiviral medications, over-the-counter topical anesthetics, and anti-inflammation agents can ease the symptoms and accelerate healing. It is important to seek medical attention if a cold sore becomes infected, persists for more than two weeks, or is accompanied by a high fever.

What Are Canker Sores?

Canker sores are painful ulcers that develop on the inner surfaces of the cheeks and lips, the tongue, and the soft palate. These ulcers are round or oval in shape with a grayish-white surface surrounded by an inflamed red area. Typically, the pain resolves within 3-4 days, and complete healing occurs within 10-15 days.

While the precise causes of canker sores are unknown, some experts believe they may be related to viruses or allergic reactions. Possible triggers include irritation, stress, smoking, and nutritional deficiencies.

There is no way to prevent or cure canker sores. To improve comfort, it can be helpful to avoid spicy foods and vigorous tooth brushing, both of which can cause and worsen mouth irritation. If necessary, benzocaine gel can be applied to numb the sore area, and antiseptic mouthwashes can be used for rinsing or gargling to help prevent infection and promote healing.

It’s important to seek medical attention if severe canker sores make it difficult or impossible to eat, or if canker sores recur very frequently.
